I don't know if he was considered the greatest. However, I saw him in an interview with 60 minutes back in the early eighties and he was being interviewed about his library of original western historical documents. He was showing the interviewer, it might have been Ed Bradley, I could be wrong, it was so long ago. At the end of the interview the reporter said that at least one thing could be said about Louis L'Amour was that he was one of the foremost authority on Western American History, and that his library was the most in-depth in the country at the time. Now, that was over twenty years ago, so I might not have it exactly right. But I know that he was considered to know what he was writing about. So, I guess at the very least it makes him one of the most knowledgeable on Western American History. I love his stuff, so I'd have to agree he's one of the greats writers. I certainly learned more from him than most.
