I never really warmed up to this story, but I found with a couple of L'Amour works that it wasn't till the 3rd or 4th read that I really, really got into the characters. Chancy is a good example. Pleasant enough at first read, better and better with subsequent reads. One the other hand, fun as it was, a book like Passin Through seems better the 1st or 2nd time around rather than the 3rd or 4th.
