If memory serves me...that would be a pleasant change...LL actually wrote THE GIFT OF COCHISE, which is what the movie screenplay was based upon, and LL followed up the short story and screenplay with the book idea that he had sold...probably over lunch; from what I've read LL seemed to enjoy meeting folks for lunch...a nice, relaxing practice, by the way. I think that THE SHADOW RIDERS was developed in a similiar manner, but LL filled out the storyline to the studio and screenwriter and later wrote the book based on what he had told the studio people. THE HORSE WHISPERER movie was okay, but I thought that Redford's treatment of the storyline changed too much of the meat of the story. Without the affair and the ending in the book the entire episode of the breaking of the horse made no sense in the movie. The core idea in the book was that the breaking of the horse near the end of the movie was against every fibre in the whisperer's being, yet for his own escape from the situation he "felt" he had no choice...he was lost, and there was no one to bring him back. This is what made the ending of the book so vivid and striking and meaningful. Redford took that very rich and deep storyline and ending, and fed us pablum. The photography was beautifully done though...especially the beginning scenes.
