"My name is Tatton Chantry and unless the gods are kind to rogues, I shall die within minutes." I've often wondered what an actor could do with the first chapter. The very core of the character comes out with the line; "I stand upon the outer edge of a continent, and who is to say that continent cannot be mine?" Wow, can you believe this Irishman? He goes on to wonder, "Am I, whose blade has sent so many others to their deaths, afraid to die?" Tatton moves on in Shakesperean tones to wonder, "How many a brave man is brave because he is watched, because he is seen. But none can see me now. I am alone. I can be a coward." So much did LL include in that first chapter I am in awe at every reading. He spoke of live and love and dieing, of conquering a contenent with naught but a sword. Warmth, fear, honor and bravery are all handled with a rapier that slices with humor and cuts with Celtic pride into the heart and soul of every Irish man or woman that has ever lifted an ale in thirst or broke into a smile that charmed the devil himself or enjoyed a good fight with anybody spoiling for one. Am I alone in my thinking or is this LL at his very best???? |
