Paris is a magical city -- at least I think so. I had tingles the whole time I was visiting. So much has happened there -- still does, and yet it retains a lightness of spirit, because of its focus on art and arts of all sorts, like cuisine and fashion. My strongest association with it, out of quite a few, is the scent of baking sugar and vanilla that wafts out of its thousands of small patisseries. I think of my visit there when I catch that scent on the street here. This was about 1976, and I found a nice Parisian boyfriend to hang out in cafes with and accompany me places like the Tuilleries gardens, where the city was putting on a fete. They presented outdoor tournaments portraying Arthurian-type legends, complete with gigantic war horses with armor and knights and jousting and a moat and flames. More and better entertainment than Hollywood, believe me -- and it was even August, the traditional time of vacation for Parisians, when lots of people pack up and go to the beach for the entire month. Paris was something.
