I believe all authors are like that to some degree. LL seemed to be able to reach a broad spectrum of folks, and I suspect its because he put so much of himself into the stories. His interest in history or geography or literature always made for great reading and he always left a trail into less traveled country. I know when I read one of Bert Murphy's books on LL that Bert actually used tracking methods that LL spoke about when Bert was searching for a town or spot that LL had purposely changed the name of. Bert thought, in one instance, that LL had changed the actual place to an Indian word, since LL had used that method before. After searching the language of several tribes he finally located the name in a Sioux dialect. It made for interesting reading following Bert as he tracked LL across New Mexico, and also showed that LL was quite devious at hiding his tracks when he wanted to be.
