Its the past that made me want to keep reading. I was anxious to find out how the young and noble bred orphan made out. Tatton is one of my favorites, and the enjoyment for me was finding out as much about his early life as LL would lay open for us. It made understanding his quest and his confidence that much easier. The history that LL was able to throw in as Tatton was growing up was also a big help to the story and of understanding how Tatton's thought processes evolved. In THE MAN FROM SKIBERDEEN we have another character not too unlike Tatton, and this was another enjoyable yarn made more enjoyable by LL's use of history in FAIR BLOWS THE WIND, and brought some understanding to the plight and guile of the Irish. The humor that was brought out in Tatton and Crispin was one of the things that seemed to be missing from the more serious minded Celt, Kerbouchard, in THE WALKING DRUM. By the way...did y'all realize that the Kerbouchard's were a real family and for centuries were buried in a church in Breton? LL's research always surprises me when I discover something like that. I can't remember now where I read it...perhaps here? I want to visit Ireland to see where my wifes family was from...Scotland to find my maternal side and now I've added Breton to the list to see the Kerbouchards...might as well see Paris, eh?
