Did ya'll ever notice how adept almost all of Louis L'Amour's heroes are at virtually EVERYTHING? It seems that they've all been pugilists, gunfighters and/or swordsmen, and usually, well-read. Take Tatton Chantry, for instance. He's well-read, and a good fencer. At least, he thinks he is. Once he has his first fight with Rafe Leckenbie, however, he finds out he's not as good as he thought. There is a moment there when he is actually shocked, or dumb-stricken, to find out that another can possibly be even better than himself. I wonder why LL's heroes always have this confidence, this cockiness. It also leads me to wonder if LL was this way... P.S. This is an exciting book, but I wish he'd get on with the "now," instead of the "past." I'm halfway through, and anxious to find out what happens to Guadalupe. Cindi
