Tom shows us how important it is to be at peace with yourself. Something within him couldn't allow him to accept himself--he had to have the respect/attention of those around him. When he didn't get what he deemed appropriate for him, he self-destructed. Tye and Orrin, on the other hand, didn't need that outside support. They had grown up secure in their hearts and minds, wrapped in the warm security of family. If Tom had grown up with a family like the Sackett clan, would he have been at peace with himself? Would he have been able to resist the darkness that destroyed him?
