I wouldn't say she was my favorite character, but I would have liked to see Louis tell us more of what Ma was thinking and going through. She endured much with relatives killed back East and her sons "out west" somewhere. She probably worried endlessly and clung to any information from or about them. The trip west for her must have been difficult and what pride did she feel when her sons began to make good in the Santa Fe area? And how much was she hurt when Orrin didn't come around anymore due to Laura?
