Packing up the family and heading out - sounds like the Grapes of Wrath. Well, it is good they did or LL may not have had the experiences and life he did to write the wonderful stories. It is amazing sometimes to stop and think what a little fork in the road meant to a person. The other fork if taken could have changed everything. As far as members of the family holding grudges and not talking - sounds fairly normal to me.
