Also in 1923, adolesence was not hyped up as much as it is today, at 15 a boy could and did do a man's work and if he was good at it, was respected as a man. In 1923, the depression was still new, and many families thought well off were staggering to recover their own self-respect and financial footing. A lot of teens left home to seek work so that they could help out the family, by sending a bit home out of their pay. Also if there were one less mouth to feed at home, then the others might have it a little easier. As LL said in one of his intro's or another, the Hobo trail, i.e., migrant workers, was one way that many people found available work.
