Oh, sure. Of course. It's the rare young person that doesn't make mistakes -- and the ones that don't usually wind up making them later on, seems like. But the seriousness of the mistake still matters at some point, even given a handicap for youth, in my opinion. I know I'd expect better out of my child than Tom's conduct. And lots of times in L.L. books, you will hear him repeat that males were men at 18 back then.
But lucky for us, there are a couple of handy ameliorating details included in the story to help smooth the path to suspension of disbelief: for one, Tom paid for his mistake with his own life, which was pretty much the limit of what he could do. And of course, there's the big fact that the town needed killin', which we were all happy to watch, fergit about why.
OK, ok! That's all I'm going to say about "Kiowa Trail" now.
