Yes. Sometimes it takes only one major event in a person's life to change him from a potential bad guy to a saint. In "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo, Jean Valjean was put into prison for 20 yrs for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister & her 8 kids. (We're talking about the era in history right before the French Revolution.) Anyway, after escaping prison, he felt pretty mean because he had not been dealt with fairly. He stole two silver candlelabras, and some other silver, from a priest. When the cops caught him, however, the priest lied & said that he GAVE the silver to Valjean. He saved his bacon, so to speak. Plus, the cops didn't recognize Valjean as the escaped convict, and he got away. This event abruptly changes Valjean's life & he ends up becoming a true saint...doing tons of good deeds for everyone else. Besides building & staffing a free hospital for the poor people, he raises the child of a dead prostitute who begs him on her deathbed to take care of her child, etc., etc.
Sorry for the literature lesson... it was just similar to the topic of discussion.
