I'm on a few days vacation at the shore and using my mother's iMac. Just getting into Bendigo and now I do remember reading it once before a long time ago so no problem with a re-read. I was thinking along the lines of taking the discussion one chapter at a time. When we talk about the ending and someone has just found the site and started reading it could ruin the reading for them. The same as someone telling you the ending of a movie as you are entering the theater. Of course we are all free to jump around the story if we want. My first impression in the first chapter was the youth of Bendigo at only 18. A man and yet so young. I'm wondering how he will feel about his older brother telling him what he is to do (build a cabin for the widow) or maybe it isn't a problem for him. Also, the widow tells her son to watch Bendigo as it is a rare "man" who knows how to build a house. An ego builder for Bendigo. I also liked the phrase of gazing at the distance works a magic. It's true, it does.
