The snow sure did play a major part early in the book. The game drifted
away, and suddenly Ben was thrust into a prominent role in the small
community. There were no provisions for a long, hard winter and the
game that Ben and Ethan brought back was a lifeline to the citizens of
the infancy of the little town. The children were lost in the sudden
snow storm, and suddenly the danger was heightened not just by the
weather, but the presense of Indians. The made the search all the
more frantic, and Ben again was put to the test as the tension built
around the recovery of the children once it was known they were taken
by the Shoshone...and again when he reacted quickly within the lodge.
Getting the children back again was another danger that Ethan and Ben
fought together as Ben's knowledge grew with each perilous step in the
whiteness, and of course the young Shoshone enemy he'd left behind
them.
A strange and dangerous enemy to have...one Ben can't hate, but must
be wary of forever when he'd walk those mountain trails. Never knowing
when the attack might come. I had visions of Barnabus in the Carolinas
so many years before...
