My impression from "War Party" was that Ruth Macken decided she and Bud would do better away from the wagon train. Most of the train people distrusted and looked down upon them because of her knowledge of the Sioux, and her habit of speaking for herself and standing on her own two feet. Those who thought differently, accompanied her.

From what I gathered in the foreward to "Bendigo Shafter", and studying an atlas, their town was supposed to be just outside of South Pass. South Pass is about 150 miles directly northeast of the southwest corner of Wyoming. Fort Bridger was about 100-110 miles southwest of the town.
