The master tried to boot her out, and the Ethan character helped her. But did they stop because the master gave her and Bud the boot, or was there another reason?

And so, where approximately are they on a modern map? He said a certain number of miles from the fort, and I think it's supposed to be Wyoming, else he wouldn't have mentioned women's suffrage in the forward. (I'm doing this all from memory. I guess I should get my book.)
