And yet....
The Irish managed to, by sheer numbers, carve a niché for themselves in the "new World", in which they became New York's Finest in terms of service to the police force, Fire brigades, military, and eventually, politics. Not all were successful or honest, but the majority brought that Irish work ethic, much more severe than the "Protestant" work ethic, as well as a serious love of party and fun that characterizes them even to this day. An Irishman will work from sun to sun, and when the sun is down, party until it's time to work again, or to attend morning Mass, and still send some money back to the old country relatives.

Now I'M Rambling!
May all your trails be happy ones!
Jim E.
