LOL!
For those who don't know, they are called "The Blood of Christ" because they reflect blood red with some sunsets. What is really neat is walking in the little stream there that ebbs and flows like an ocean, looking up and seeing the sand dunes (Great Sand Dunes National Park), and seeing the impressive Sangre de Cristo Mts right behind the dunes. It is some kind of gorging out on a color cornucopia.
My first time to Colorado (1988) I searched for a week for a sunset and you know what? Most of the time it gets dusky around 5 or so because the Rockies block out the view of the sunset! I have seen some beauts in the Four Corners area, stopping the car and looking back at the Mesa Verde area and seeing fluorescent orange-colored mesas reflecting the sunset. I'm no LL, but he's the one got me on those annual treks in the first place! Anyone seen a sunset from say Pikes Peak or Independence Pass? At 14K+, that would be something. You could look east and west for miles around.
