I think your are right. Milo was interested in Anne and was looking for her but helped out Molly. He kept thing of Anne and protected Molly. I liked the end. Romantically it works well. He saw the end of a part of his life but the beginning of a new part. LL's "good" women were strong, proactive about what was happening and in some ways were just as strong as the men tho always women. Molly was getting away from Bess and was prepared to kill to save her self. That is strong and proactive!!!
