I totally missed this post, sorry! I just found it now, and it is such a good one. There was more to the book I was reading, of course, than I put into the post, and the author did mention the women settlers, too. It was quite an undertaking that particular Louis (forgot the #) set himself. I think Americans usually don't realize that the French and Spanish both sent colonists and not just trappers or soldiers.

The women you talk about remind me of the "casket girls," whom L.L. talks about in one of his New Orleans-set books (Treasure Mountain?). Anyway, thanks so much for your thoughts. It was just the sort of thing I hoped to hear when I brought it up.
