Ron, I don't think they are Canadian spellings. I think they are archaic spellings that never got changed, like The Boston Celtics (Kelts now). Place names don't usually get changed. They are very stubborn in their staying power, like Cape Canaveral, as opposed to the dumped Cape Kennedy. (It's now just Kennedy Space Center.)
