They learned that from the lightning-caused fires. It cleared out saplings and brought new grass, and the animals followed. The soil around Chicago and all over prairie regions shows signs of many ancient prairie fires -- human and natural. Even today, in the restored prairies, park workers have to burn them once a year or they won't maintain their prairie character. Some seeds are bred for surviving the fires and do best in the rich soil after one. I went and checked at Amazon, by the way, and that book I mentioned is also out of print; but they did have at least three copies for sale used at the ZShops. Probably it's in a lot of local libraries, though. If the Talking Books people did it, then it was likely a library journal recommendation.
