I think you have some valid points. When Barnabas was standed on the island he mentioned that it was reported to be warm there yet it was quite chilly. Of course weather is changeable, but it may have put him further north. He also mentions it as an area of storms which Cape Hatteras is known as a real storm area which brought down many ships.
