Yes, that is unfortunately what can happen. Elyse's point is also well taken though, and I don't mean to paint all archaeologists with the same brush. I have been on two archaeological digs as a volunteer and met some wonderful professionals in the field. But I also know of some rats who steal and hoard. By and large I trust there are many more good folks who are in it for the information gained. But as with any endeavor, there are always going to be those who make the rest look bad. I think in the long run we are better off as the artifacts will eventually end up in a museum for all to enjoy.
