I like Comstock Lode and Reilly's Luck. Both have stories of children and how they are shaped by their youth and how they live when they grow up. RL has a lot of help-along for life, sort of like Bendigo Shafter, and CL, well, that is a mammoth read that teaches a lot about mining and broker-middlemen. RL to me has the baddest female L'A character, Myra. I also like Treasure Mountain a lot, because it has a decades-old comeuppance, a search for Pa Sackett demise by Tell, the kidnapping of Orrin, life in the rough areas of New Orleans and the area just east of Four Corners where the real Treasure Montain is located. Golly, I just like so many of them, just pick any. Never did cotton to Haunted Mesa - once was enough. Borden Chantry's murder mystery is a good one, too.
