I liked reading again the part about racing the horses to get to buy the wheat to sell to Sitka, and the parts about the political intrigue with the controlling factors while the Csar is so far away.... It is my third read, and it is so obvious to me again how L'A seems to be preparing the reader for Helena and Jean to become one flesh. I wonder if it is as romantic for women who are left by their husbands for a younger woman? Or is it painful for the Count as well, to watch the romance on fire politely kept under control? I have enjoyed the ship maneuvers and the division of labor to act as one for their ultimate success. Written in 1953, and dedicated to Kathy - pretty neat book, although I still prefer his westerns. I am now enjoying the part where Jean is planning their escape out of Sitka. And I am looking forward to Flint. L'A stories are always my favorites. |
