I cannot read LL without getting persistant about finishing. Once I
start I keep reading even when I have read it before!! Just finished
Westward the Tide and Ride the River. Strong books with lots of LL
philosophy. Westward has a long (page or so) monologe by an old indian
who comes into the camp. It has a very strong ecological/enviornmental
message. For a statement written in 1977 it is up to date today. It is
a very sad speech and seems to be placed there almost as an aside
rather than a full part of the plot. Ride has a good description of
the first logging of the big trees. It to has some strong parts of ll
philsophy that tend to stay with one. The ideals that LL wrote in his
books and later stories are clear and present still today. I think
that as more people read his books around the world they will
understand more of what our young country was built upon and maybe
will help them to become stronger, too.

The beginning of Ride and Flint are masterful in setting the stage and
story in a few short pages. The recitation of the lessons learned from
the mentors are already set out. They have it to do!! And will keep
doing it. In both the main characters feel responcible for others and
put themselves at risk for others!!!.
